Ideas and observations on collaboration, identity, and sustainable improvement

The insights below bring together themes from Philo Holland’s blog, ACS-Research publications, applied projects, and survey analyses. They explore how people understand one another, how invisible friction affects cooperation, and how digital, cultural, and organizational environments shape individual and collective behavior.

Some observations come from exploratory surveys or earlier applied research. They are presented as insights and research directions rather than universal conclusions.

COLLABORATION UNDER PRESSURE

Collaboration difficulties are often visible as delay, duplication, frustration, conflict, or weak ownership. Their sources may be less visible: inaccurate assumptions, unmet expectations, professional specialization, information overload, hierarchical distance, cultural interpretation, or the belief that communication has occurred simply because information was sent.

ACS-Research describes these hidden effects as forms of interpersonal frictional loss. The practical question is not only whether people are communicating, but whether they understand one another sufficiently to make decisions and act together.

DIVERSITY, INCLUSION, AND UNDERSTANDING

Diversity does not automatically produce collaboration. People need ways to recognize differences without reducing one another to stereotypes, and ways to include stakeholder knowledge before decisions become difficult to change.

Earlier Dynamic Culture Integration research examined how culturally neutral learning environments, stakeholder inclusion, and descriptive rather than evaluative information could support dialogue and cooperation. It also explored Human Integration Potential as a way to make explicit and implicit interpersonal factors visible within newly formed groups.

A recurring insight is that inclusion is not merely an ethical statement or communication exercise. When people experience that their knowledge and circumstances have been considered, they may be more willing to participate in and support a shared project.

THE DIGITAL LIFE AND CONNECTIVITY PRESSURE

A recent exploratory survey of 36 respondents examined how connectivity, digital reflection, embodied reflection, online identity, and purpose interact in student life. The results are preliminary and should not be generalized beyond the pilot group, but they provide useful directions for further study.

The pilot identified a connectivity-paradox scale with an average of approximately 3.82 on a 1–7 scale and internal consistency of approximately α = 0.74. The scale captured experiences such as pressure to reply, being constantly reachable, feeling lonely despite being connected, group-chat support and overload, fear of missing out, presence in face-to-face interaction, relationship quality, and peace with oneself.

The findings suggest that connectivity can be experienced as both support and pressure. Digital connection is not equivalent to interpersonal presence, and a high level of contact does not necessarily produce a strong sense of relationship.

ONLINE IDENTITY AND PURPOSE

The same pilot identified an online-identity-tension scale with an average of approximately 3.17 and internal consistency of approximately α = 0.54. The scale included the relationship between online and offline identity, multiple selves across platforms, pressure to appear well, the influence of likes or followers, performative posting, and aspects of self shown only online.

The item measuring whether respondents felt they were “going through the motions” of life showed a correlation of approximately r = 0.53 with connectivity paradox and approximately r = 0.58 with online identity tension. With a sample of 36, these results should be treated as exploratory signals rather than definitive evidence, but they suggest a useful research direction: connectivity pressure and online self-management may be associated with existential disengagement.

REFLECTION: DIGITAL AND EMBODIED

The pilot distinguished between digital reflection and embodied reflection. Digital reflection included phone notes, journaling, social-media memories, fitness or health trackers, messaging history, and paper journals. Its average was approximately 3.54, with internal consistency of approximately α = 0.62.

Embodied reflection included meditation or mindfulness, yoga or Tai Chi, deep breathing or grounding, prayer, therapy, and walks or time in nature. Its average was approximately 2.71, with internal consistency of approximately α = 0.84.

The contrast suggests that people may use digital tools frequently to observe or record themselves while using embodied practices less often. The two forms of reflection should not be assumed to have the same function, and further research may examine whether they support different forms of awareness, integration, or agency.

COVID AND SOCIAL APPRENTICESHIP

In the pilot group, the average age during the main Covid lockdowns was approximately 16.82 years, with respondents ranging from 13 to 20. This places most participants in mid-adolescence, a period when many people ordinarily expand their social networks, meet unfamiliar people, develop relationships, and enter new educational or professional environments.

Open responses described the normalization of online contact, greater appreciation of face-to-face interaction, increased caution or mistrust, and missed opportunities to meet people. Respondents who entered university around the lockdown period particularly described lost opportunities for social and relationship development.

This suggests a possible “social apprenticeship” research theme: a period of development in which social learning was moved into digital channels or delayed in physical environments.

ORGANIZATIONAL FRICTION

ACS publications describe organizational friction as a combination of misunderstandings, unmet expectations, departmental rivalry, hierarchical distance, passive bias, and the isolation of specialized knowledge. These factors can create time and monetary costs without appearing clearly in traditional performance indicators.

The research materials identify three recurring pressures: increasing professional specialization, growing volumes of data, and stricter governance, compliance, controlling, and risk requirements. Together, these pressures can make cooperation more difficult while increasing the need for accurate understanding and stakeholder inclusion.

The practical insight is that organizational performance depends not only on formal processes, technology, and financial measures. It also depends on whether people can coordinate meaning, expectations, responsibility, and action across the system.

HEADQUARTERS AND LOCAL REALITIES

Applied project research identified recurring difficulties when headquarters designs global programs without sufficient involvement from subsidiaries or local stakeholders. A centrally produced solution may be technically correct and professionally presented while still failing to reflect local customers, languages, relationships, or operating conditions.

In one documented marketing case, a redesigned international process reduced production, printing, and shipping costs by 70 percent, delivered 45 country-language brochure variations to 7,500 employees in 24 countries within 24 hours, and achieved 100 percent stakeholder acceptance. The example illustrates how inclusion and local knowledge can influence cost, speed, acceptance, and implementation.

 

The wider insight is that local relevance is not necessarily a threat to global consistency. When the relevant stakeholders participate in the process, global and local requirements can be coordinated more accurately.

TRUST, RESPECT, AND SUSTAINABLE IMPROVEMENT

Trust is not presented as a substitute for governance or expertise; it is a condition that influences whether people will share information, raise concerns, ask questions, and support a decision.
